Best 3D Models for Paint 3D: Download Free and Premium Options

Paint 3D is a creative application that comes free with Windows 10. It allows you to create creative projects using 2D and 3D tools. Paint 3D is a refresh of the long-standing Microsoft Paint software and requires no design experience to use. It's easy to become a 3D artist by customizing existing 3D models from its built-in library or create designs from scratch.

Simple yet powerful, Paint 3D introduces users to the world of 3D modeling. Users can build 3D objects and even remix models made by other Paint 3D users. You can add 3D text and effects to your creations, before sharing them with others.

While 3D modeling may sound complicated, Paint 3D's tools are not difficult to use. Microsoft has lots of tutorials available on how to use Paint 3D, which are useful for beginners. The app even includes some predefined 3D models that you can use to practice your 3D modeling skills, including customizing it and viewing it from different angles.

If you're lacking creative ideas for a more complicated project, you can work with the prebuilt 3D models available in the Remix 3D panel. You can also download stickers from the community, which you can apply to your model for decoration. When you apply a sticker, it automatically wraps itself around the 3D object, while any paint you apply sticks perfectly to the edges of your creation.

Despite a focus on 3D modeling, the program also allows you to create unique 2D art using its brushes, shapes, text, and effects. In this respect it's very similar to its predecessor, classic MS Paint. Other alternative drawing apps to Paint 3D include Blender and Sketchup Make. 3D Builder, meanwhile, is good for viewing and printing rather than designing 3D models.

Painting a 3D model can be tricky if you're using complicated software, but Procreate has always had a reputation for being easy to understand and user-friendly, and its feature for painting 3D models is no different. With the ability to draw, paint, and modify textures and lighting, you can truly bring your 3D models to life. Want to know how? Keep reading.

Procreate is over a decade old, but in case you're not familiar with the digital art software, Procreate is an app for iPad that uses raster graphics for painting and sketching. In 2021, Procreate released a feature that allows users to import and paint 3D models. The app, however, cannot create 3D models.

To import your own 3D model, make sure you're on the Procreate Gallery page and tap Import in the top right corner. Find the location of the file you want to import, which must be an OBJ or USDZ file, and tap it to open. The file will immediately be imported to Procreate's painting page, and you can begin working on it right away.

3D models are made up of multiple meshes that are sectioned under Layers (the icon with the two layered squares on the far right end of the top toolbar). These layers are divided into texture sets and sub-meshes to make finding them easier. For example, when looking at a 3D model of sunglasses, you will see Left and Right are separate under Temples.

However, if you want to halve your work time and paint a whole texture set at once, you can select the entire mesh by holding the modify icon (the empty round-cornered square between the brush size and opacity toolbar on the left) and tapping on either mesh on the 3D object. In doing this, you select every mesh within the texture set.

You can also paint through a mesh by toggling the Paint through mesh option on under 3D in the Actions menu (the spanner icon next to Gallery in the toolbar). This function is helpful if there is an object blocking the mesh you want to paint, so you don't have to keep toggling Show layer on and off.

Since you are painting a 3D object that emulates reality, the roughness and metallic layers are there to bring life to the object through texture and sheen. Think about the object and how it would act in real life; is it made of smooth plastic, or was it carved from wood? How would it reflect in various lighting and environmental settings?

While it's perfectly fine to draw directly onto the object in 3D mode, it can be challenging when you want to add small details, such as a signature or detailed pictures. The 3D mode might warp the brush, or you might not get the same precision you would have painting in 2D. That's where Show 2D Texture comes in handy.

As you can see, painting a 3D model with Procreate is a simple and easy process. The interface is user-friendly, and there are potentially limitless colors, brushes, and 3D models for you to use during the process. The only downside is that you can't create a 3D model from scratch, but when it comes to bringing one to life, Procreate has got you covered.

3D Builder is a lightweight free 3D tool developed by Microsoft for Windows operating systems. You can view, create, and personalize 3D objects with 3D Builder: downloading many kinds of 3D files and editing them using a wide range of powerful yet easy-to-use tools; taking a photo and making it 3D; personalizing 3D objects by embossing your name on them or combining models and pieces to make something new; as well as building from scratch using simple customizable shapes.

A three-dimensional model (3D model) refers to a physical body adopting a collection of points in 3D space. It is connected by various geometric entities like lines, triangles, and curved surfaces. Being a collection of data, points, and other information, 3D models can be created manually, algorithmically (procedural modeling), or by scanning. Their surfaces may be further defined with texture mapping.

You can use any Photoshop painting tools to paint directly on a 3D model just as you would on a 2D layer. Use selection tools to target specific model areas or let Photoshop identify and highlight paintable areas. 3D menu commands let you clear away areas of a model to access interior or hidden portions for painting.

Live 3D Painting: (Default in Photoshop) Brush strokes made in the 3D model view or the texture view are reflected in real time in the other view. This 3D painting method offers high performance and minimum distortion.

Layer Projection Painting: The Gradient tool and filters use this painting method. The Layer Projection Painting method involves merging a painted layer with the underlying 3D layer. During the merge operation, Photoshop automatically projects the paint onto the appropriate target textures.

After generating UVs for a Fuse model, the model moves from its original position. This is a expected behavior in most rigged models, as the rigged position is different from the position of the mesh. The model shifts to the mesh position because the rig is removed when generating UVs for that model.

You can choose to paint your 3D objects in the unlit mode. This mode ignores any lighting in your scene and wraps raw texture data of the appropriate type around your 3D objects. Painting in the unlit mode lets you paint without shading and with greater color accuracy.

For more complex models with interior or hidden areas, you can hide sections of the model for easier access to surfacesyou want to paint. For example, to apply paint to the dashboardof a car model, you can temporarily cut away the roof or windshield, then zoom inside the car to get an unobstructed view.

The Minimum falloff angle sets a range within which paintgradually fades as it approaches the maximum falloff angle. Forexample, if the maximum falloff angle is 45, and the minimum falloffis 30, paint opacity decreases from 100 to 0 percent between 30and 45 degrees of falloff.

It may not be clear just from looking at a 3D model whetheryou can successfully paint on certain areas. Because the model viewmay not provide a 1 to 1 correspondence with the 2D texture itself, applying paint directly to the model is different from directlypainting on a 2D texture map. What appears to be a small brush onthe model may in fact be much larger in relation to the texture, dependingon the resolution of the texture, or how close you are to the model whenapplying paint.
